Objectivism is a practical philosophy in the sense that it is based on man's long term self-interest. It is opposed pragmatism, which is action based on short-term self interest alone. Pragmatism as a way of life is impractical because man's life requires him to take the long-term effects of his actions into consideration. Long-term thinking requires acting according to principle.
