Objectivism is a practical philosophy in the sense that it is based on man's long term self-interest.  It is opposed [[pragmatism]], which is action based on short-term self interest alone.  Pragmatism as a way of life is impractical because man's life requires him to take the long-term effects of his actions into consideration.  Long-term thinking requires acting according to [[principle]].
